UCC student wins Tim Scanlon Bursary

Patrick Kerry of University College Cork has been named as the recipient of Matheson’s Tim Scanlon Corporate Law Bursary 2026.

Established in 2022 to honour former Matheson partner and chair Tim Scanlon, the annual bursary supports undergraduate and postgraduate law students pursuing careers in corporate law.

The firm says that Kerry was selected after a “highly competitive” application process, which required applicants to submit an essay on a contemporary corporate-law topic.

As the 2026 recipient, he participated in Matheson’s summer internship programme and also received a bursary of €5,000.

Analytical ability

In recognition of Tim Scanlon's passion for the arts, the recipient also received a piece of art by Yoko Akino titled ‘Sail on Silver Moon’.

Matheson managing partner Shane Hogan described the standard of this year’s applications as “extremely high”.

“Patrick’s submission demonstrated real analytical ability and a strong interest in corporate law,” he added.

Patrick Kerry said that he was “extremely appreciative” of the extensive mentorship and support from the team at Matheson and the opportunities provided during the internship.
