‘Bitesize briefing’ on assisted decision-making

An online event organised by Law Society Professional Training will focus on assisted decision-making.

The ‘bitesize briefing’ will take place via Zoom on Thursday 22 October (1-2pm).

Aimed at providing a comprehensive overview of capacity law in Ireland and the Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act 2015, the event is worth one general CPD hour by e-learning.

Abolition of wardship

The webinar will focus on the key features of the 2015 act, which:

  • Abolishes the Wards of Court system and repeals the 1871 regulations,
  • Establishes a tiered system of decision-support arrangements for people who need support in making decisions,
  • Provides for the individual's right of autonomy and self-determination to be respected in all areas of decision-making – including via an Enduring Power of Attorney and an Advance Healthcare Directive, and
  • Establishes a Decision Support Service with clearly defined functions – including the promotion of public awareness relating to persons needing assistance to exercise their capacity.

Áine Hynes SC, a partner in public and administrative law in St John Solicitors, will present the webinar.

She chairs the Law Society Mental Health Law and Capacity Taskforce and has made extensive submissions to Government on appropriate amendments to the 2015 act.
